Tried for years to “remember” to do a breathing practice during the day and failed about as often as I tried. Setting a reminder didn’t help. I’d just swipe it away. What finally worked was dumb and almost insulting in how simple it is. I tied it to coffee.
Now the rule is this: while the coffee’s brewing, I take 10 slow breaths. That’s the whole thing. The coffee is the alarm. I never forget to make coffee, so I never fully forget the reps anymore. The habit I already had carries the one I was trying to build.
This is the move nobody mentions when they tell you to “build better habits.” The thing you need is an anchor. Bolt the new rep onto something you already do on autopilot, and the old habit does the remembering for you.
Systems over willpower, again. Willpower has to show up and choose, every time. An anchored habit just rides along on a choice you made years ago and never think about.
After I brush my teeth, one honest line in a notebook. After I buckle the seatbelt, one slow breath before I start the car. Pick a thing you do every single day without fail, and staple the rep to the back of it.
I still overcomplicate this constantly. I’ll design some elaborate 5-step morning routine, run it for 3 days, and quit. The dumb little coffee breaths have outlasted every grand system I ever built. Small and stapled beats big and heroic.
So what’s one rep you could staple to something you already never miss, starting tomorrow?
Friday, we close the week out honest.
