Someone asked me last week how long it took for the mindfulness to “work,” and the honest answer is longer than I wanted. I sat most days for what felt like a month before I noticed anything, and even then it was small. My wife noticed before I did. I almost quit a dozen times in that gap.
That gap is where almost everybody quits. You put in the reps, the breathing, the early mornings nobody claps for, and the scoreboard doesn’t move. No visible payoff. It feels like shoveling effort into a hole.
The reps were working the whole time. Mental fitness compounds underground, like interest you can’t see until one day it’s a number. The steadiness you’re building shows up later, usually in some ordinary hard moment where you notice you didn’t come unglued the way you used to.
The real discipline is doing the rep for weeks while the scoreboard shows nothing. Anybody can train on the days the results are obvious. The work is trusting the ones where they aren’t.
So trust the lag. Keep the rep small enough to survive a flat week, and treat “I see no results yet” as the normal middle of the process, not a verdict on you. Keep going. You’re in the part right before the part where it pays.
I still want the receipt the same day I do the work. I’ll do a hard thing once and check the next morning to see if I’m fixed yet. That is not how any of it works, I know better, and I still do it.
So what’s the rep you’ve been judging too early, that might just need a few more quiet weeks before it shows?
Friday, we close the week out honest.
