Football’s back this week and I’m as guilty as anyone, already checking scores I have no business caring about. But the part that holds my attention is the July no one puts on TV.
Every play you’ll cheer for this fall was built months ago. Two-a-days in brutal heat, film rooms, a thousand reps of the same footwork until it stopped needing thought. By the time the lights come on, the work is already done or it isn’t. The game just reveals which.
You don’t rise to the moment on Sunday. You sink to the level of your August.
Mental fitness runs on the same engine, and it’s why I keep planting my flag on this lane. The calm you’ll want in the hard conversation, the patience your kids will test on the worst possible day, all of it shows up for one reason: you drilled it in the boring weeks when nothing was on the line.
So the move is the same as ever. Keep the rep small enough that a tired, unmotivated version of you still runs it. 5 minutes of quiet before the house wakes up. One honest page in a notebook. 10 pushups before the shower. A real breath before you answer the thing. Two-a-days for your nervous system, run in private, months before the season that needs them.
Systems over willpower, because willpower is a bad special teams unit. It only shows up when it feels like it. A small enough system runs whether you’re feeling it or not.
I miss reps all the time. Blew off my morning sit twice last week telling myself I was too busy, which really meant I didn’t feel like it. Give yourself grace, then get back on the field.
So what’s the offseason rep you could run today that future-you gets to cash in when the lights finally come on?
Friday, we close the week out honest.
