Wednesday Reps
The yellow jersey is just the day the reps came due
Tadej Pogacar won his 5th Tour de France last week. 21 stages, a little over 3 weeks, roughly 2,000 miles through the mountains and the heat. Most of us saw the last 50 meters. Arms up, yellow jersey, champagne.
The part I sit with is the Tuesday in February that never made a highlight reel. The 5am trainer ride in the dark, legs screaming, no crowd, no camera, a guy doing the rep because he said he would. A Tour is won in the thousands of joyless base-training days months and years (decades even) before anyone’s watching. July is just when the bill comes due in your favor.
Mental fitness is the same animal, and it’s why I keep hammering this lane. The steady leader, the parent who doesn’t come apart when the week does, none of that shows up on the day you need it if you haven’t been quietly banking it for months. You don’t rise to the moment. You sink to your training.
So the move, same as ever, make the rep too small to skip. Keep it stupid small. 3 breaths before you open the laptop. One honest page in a notebook before bed. Reps a tired, unmotivated person can still pull off. Systems over willpower, because willpower took the day off and the small rep doesn’t care how you feel.
And here’s the part the highlight reel hides. Pogacar has cracked before. Blown up on a climb, watched a rival ride away, had the bad day in front of the entire world. The reps are what get you back on the bike faster after a day like that. One rep so small you can’t fall off of it, and on the days you do fall off, one small rep back on.
So what’s the unglamorous February rep you could put in today that future-you gets to collect on later?
