Took a real day off on Sunday. No reading list, no “quick” inbox check that turns into an hour. Just a walk, a nap I hadn’t earned by any metric, and a long dinner. Felt faintly illegal the whole time, like I was getting away with something.
Recovery is a rep. Probably the one most of us skip, because it’s the one that looks the least like work. We’ll grind the discipline reps all day, the early workout, the extra hour nobody asked for. Then we treat rest like a reward you only unlock once everything’s done, which for a driven person is never.
So the tank runs low and we lead the team on fumes and call it commitment. Fill the tank before you lead the team. It’s basic logistics. A depleted nervous system makes worse calls, shorter-tempered ones, the kind you spend the next day apologizing for.
So make recovery a scheduled rep, same as the hard stuff. Put the real day off on the calendar in ink. Guard the 8 hours of sleep like a meeting with your most important client, because in a way they are.
I’m the worst at this. My gut treats an open hour as a problem to solve instead of a tank to fill. Blew off two rest days last week chasing a deadline, then wondered why I had no patience left for anyone by Friday. The rep was sitting right there. I skipped it.
So what’s the recovery rep you keep skipping, and could you put the next one on the calendar before you close this?
Friday, we close the week out honest.
