Watching the US Open late last night, and the thing I couldn’t stop noticing wasn’t the winners. It was what the best players do right after they lose a point. Double-fault on a big one, and instead of stewing, they turn their back to the net, walk to the towel, pick at their strings, breathe. Maybe 20 seconds of a small private ritual. Then they turn back around, a clean slate, and play the next point like the last one never happened.
There’s a clock on it, by the way. 25 seconds between points. The pros treat those seconds like sacred ground. The match turns on whether the bad shot rents space in the next one, and the shot itself is already gone. Amateurs carry the double-fault into the serve. Champions set it down in the 25 seconds no one’s really watching.
I get the same 25 seconds all day and almost never use them. Kid spills the milk, and I carry it into how I answer the next email. A rough call at 10am flavors the whole afternoon. I let one lost point run the entire match, because I never learned to reset between them.
So today’s reset is stolen straight from the pros. After anything goes sideways, take your own 25 seconds before the next thing starts. Turn away from the screen. One long breath out. Name it, out loud if you can: that one’s done. Then serve again. The reset gives each bad point a shorter tail. The points still come, they just stop bleeding into the next one.
Respond instead of react. The gap between the double-fault and the next serve is where the whole match lives, and you get one every few minutes if you’ll take it.
I still blow it, mostly by skipping the reset because I’ve decided I’m “fine.” I’m usually not fine, I’m just fast. Give yourself grace, take the 25, serve again.
So what lost point have you been dragging around all day that you could set down in the next 25 seconds?
