Monday Focus Check for July 13, 2026
Systems will win over will power!
My hand used to find my phone before my eyes were all the way open in the morning. Nobody decided that. It was a reflex I had built over years. Screen on, and the first few minutes of the day handed straight to other people’s priorities before I’d claimed one of my own.
I used to do this more than I want to admit. I measure everything. Calories, steps, hours slept, likes, the number in a bank account. Most of those numbers live in the phone, so that’s where my attention goes the second I’m conscious.
And the apps built to take our attention are extraordinary at the job, better than my willpower on most mornings.
So Monday is where I try to get out ahead of the theft. One question before any input arrives. What is the single thing that, if it gets my real attention this week, makes most of the other noise matter less? I write it on paper, because the paper isn’t trying to sell me anything.
Systems over willpower. I put the one thing where I’ll see it and let the system carry the load my discipline can’t.
Oh… and a new cool tool (new to me). Someone in our Awareness to Action course put me onto a tool for exactly this over the weekend. Marc Bear mentioned an app called One Sec. It doesn’t lock you out of anything, which is why I like it. You still get to open the feed or the inbox or whatever’s calling. But the second you tap it, One Sec stops you, makes you take a breath, and asks whether you actually still want to go in. That tiny pause is enough. That’s the same idea as the paper. Put a system between the reflex and the reward, because the reflex is a lot faster than I am.
I don’t win this every week. Plenty of Mondays the phone gets me before I get me, and I catch myself twenty minutes deep in something I won’t remember by lunch. Give yourself grace there. Grace, not an excuse, and I’m still learning where the line between those two sits.
If you named your one thing right now, before the inbox and the feed named it for you, what would it be?
Tomorrow I’ll get into what to do when your body reacts before your brain has caught up. For today, one thing, on paper.
