Handing the reins over this Monday. My co-host and business partner, Will Schneider, wrote this one, and it was too good to keep to myself. He’s been sitting with something Mark Divine brought onto our podcast earlier this year, the idea of the Kali Yuga, and how a set of ancient teachings maps almost eerily onto the noise we’re all swimming in right now. Protecting your attention sits right in the middle of it, which makes it a fitting Focus Check, so I’m getting out of the way. Take it, Will.
From Will:
How to overcome all this chaos.
What does it take to navigate these challenging times? Here are some lessons from the ancient Hindu teachings of the Kali Yuga that are helpful to know. This was brought to my attention by the great Mark Divine, Ph.D., who was on our podcast earlier this year.
First, what is the Kali Yuga?
It’s the fourth and final age in the Hindu cycle of yugas. The Kali Yuga is the “dark age,” marked by moral decline, spiritual disconnection, and rising conflict and materialism. What this looks like in daily life: truth becoming rare, people driven more by self-interest than by duty or values, and attention constantly pulled outward instead of inward.
Here are 7 insights that will wake you up and help get you on the right path, instead of being pulled down into the vortex.
Choose simplicity and scarcity; they outweigh complexity. In other words, honest living, presence, and small, consistent practices beat elaborate systems every time.
Make gratitude and contentment your anchor. Daily gratitude shifts you from scarcity thinking to sufficiency, which acts as the antidote to the Kali Yuga’s core disease: craving.
Protect your attention like it’s gold. That means mindful consumption and limiting the endless stimuli: mindless scrolling, numbing social media, porn consumption, drama-filled people, the toxic news, and the rest.
Keep regulating your nervous system. Calm yourself with breathwork before you try to think your way out of chaos. Try the 4-7-8 breath we always talk about. It’s an incredible way to release stress and anxiety, and it grounds you in the moment.
Be of service. Taking care of others dissolves the isolation that chaos breeds and reconnects you to something bigger than your selfish mind.
Study sacred texts like the Gita or the Bible for perspective. They’re meant to ground your ethics and values.
Practice discipline paired with self-compassion. That’s what the teaching emphasizes, because harshness toward yourself just adds another layer of chaos.
Bonus: find and work for more stillness. It’s your base camp for every action you take.
So where do you start? All it takes is committing to one of these 7, and through daily repetition, everything starts to change.
If you need some help, we’re always here for you over at the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast.
Back to Jon. That’s Will. Pick one of the seven and give it an honest week.
