I put off a doctor’s appointment for 8 months this year. Nothing dramatic, just a thing my body kept mentioning and I kept overruling, because I had it handled, because I’m the guy who handles things. Going in felt a little like admitting the machine might need a mechanic. I finally went. It was fine. Those 8 months of low-grade dread were the actual cost.
Men are champions at this. We treat our own warning lights, the body’s and the mind’s, like dashboard annoyances to ignore instead of information to act on. The chest thing. The sleep that fell apart months ago. The fuse that’s gotten shorter with the people we love. The mood that’s been gray for weeks. We white-knuckle past all of it and call it toughness.
That’s self-sufficiency wearing its most expensive disguise. The same instinct that says “I’ve got it” at work says “I’m fine” to the doctor and to the person who worked up the nerve to ask if you’re okay. And the light on the dash doesn’t care how tough you are. It just keeps blinking until the thing it was warning about becomes the thing that stops you.
So this is the Friday debrief, two honest questions.
What warning light have I been driving past, in my body, my head, or a relationship, telling myself I’ll deal with it later?
Who would I tell to go get that checked in a heartbeat if it were them, and why doesn’t that same grace reach me?
Getting it looked at is the strong move, the boring, grown-man strong move. The toughest guys I know are the ones secure enough to pull over and look under the hood before the engine quits on a back road at night.
So what’s the light you’ve been ignoring, and what would it take to finally get it checked this week?
Next week we’re back, Monday with the new episode and Tuesday with a reset.
