It’s the tail end of August and I caught something ugly in myself this week. I felt guilty for resting. Guilt for sitting on the porch doing nothing useful while a voice in my head read off everything I “should” be doing instead. That voice has been my roommate for almost 5 decades, and I’m only now starting to question his credentials.
Somewhere along the way I fused two things that don’t belong together: what I produce and what I’m worth. Hit the numbers, earn the right to exist another day. Miss them, and the floor goes shaky. It’s a brutal way to live and from the outside it looks exactly like ambition. The world claps loudest for a man right before it uses him all the way up.
Here’s what I’m working to believe, and some days I even pull it off. Your worth is already settled. It was set before your first win and it survives your worst loss. Rest is a basic input, like water, and you’re allowed to drink before you’ve “earned” it.
So this is the Friday debrief, last one of the month. Be honest.
Where am I treating my own worth like something I have to re-earn every single day?
What would I do this weekend if resting didn’t require permission?
Whose voice is it in my head calling rest laziness, and is it even mine?
What’s one thing I could do purely because it fills me, with zero productive justification?
Log off. Sit on the porch. Be a human being for 48 hours, not a human doing. The work will still be there Monday, and you’ll meet it as a person instead of a husk.
So what will you let yourself rest from this weekend, guilt and all set down?
See you Monday. Peace.
