Happier, Healthier, and More Stress Free in 2023! The Power of Mindful Spending (Money, Time, and Energy!)
Hello again!
Jon Macaskill here again - Retired Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness and leadership consultant from Frogman Mindfulness and the Men Talking Mindfulness Podcast.
This week, let's explore a dimension of mindfulness that extends beyond our meditation cushions and directly into our daily lives: Mindful Spending... and it's not just about money but also about our most valuable resources – time and energy.
1. The Currency of Time: Time, once spent, is never recovered. Every second, minute, and hour is a testament to the lives we lead. But are we making the most of it? Begin by evaluating where your time goes. Are the hours spent in alignment with your values and priorities? If not, can you recalibrate? A weekly reflection can help you realign your activities with your goals and intentions, ensuring time is not just spent, but invested.
2. Mindful Money Management: While money in itself doesn't bring happiness, how we spend it can significantly influence our well-being. A study by Dunn, Gilbert, and Wilson suggests that spending money on experiences rather than material items boosts happiness. Why? Because experiences contribute to our identity, connect us with others, and are less likely to be compared to what others have. Before making a purchase, pause and reflect: Will this bring lasting value to my life? Is it in line with my financial goals? Mindfulness allows us to make more intentional decisions with our wallets.
3. Expending Energy Wisely: Just as with time and money, our energy is a finite resource. Reflect on where your energy flows each day. Are there tasks or people that deplete you? Can they be approached differently, or even eliminated? Prioritize activities and relationships that replenish rather than drain. As the adage goes, "Where attention goes, energy flows." Ensure your energy is flowing toward what truly matters.
4. The Triple Check: Before committing to anything - be it a purchase, a new task, or even an emotional investment - employ the triple check:
Time: Will this use of my time align with my priorities?
Money: Does this expenditure align with my financial and personal values?
Energy: Will this boost or deplete my energy reserves?
Closing Thoughts: Life's true essence lies in how we spend our time, energy, and resources. When we become more mindful of our expenditures in these areas, we cultivate a life that is not only richer in experiences but also more aligned with our authentic selves.
Train hard, breathe easy,
Jon
