#34 of 52 Mindful Bites: Nourishing Body & Soul!
Hello again, Jon Macaskill here, retired Navy SEAL Commander turned Mindfulness and Leadership coach from Frogman Mindfulness and the Men Talking Mindfulness Podcast.
Welcome to this week’s edition of “Happier, Healthier, and More Stress Free in 2023!” (I’m going to have to change that name soon as we’re heading into the final quarter of 2023!)
Today, as I’m getting ready to start me 46 day challenge of wellness (tomorrow is my 46th birthday!), I thought it would make sense to dive into a topic close to the core of wellness: Mindful Nutrition.
Food is not just fuel; it's a daily ritual that holds the power to transform our physical health, emotional stability, and mental clarity. Inspired by the wisdom from my own Navy SEAL training, and complemented by mindful practices, I encourage you to explore a new relationship with your meals. Let’s get started!
1. Mindful Eating, Mindful Living
- Slow down and savor your food. Use all five senses to engage with your meal. Smell the aroma, appreciate the colors, chew thoroughly, and let your palate luxuriate in every bite.
2. Intention & Gratitude
- Before you eat, take a moment to express gratitude for the meal before you. Recognize the hands and resources it took to bring this nourishment to your plate.
3. Nutritional Wisdom
- Your body is wise. Listen to it! Eat when you're hungry, stop when you’re full. Choose foods that are colorful, varied, and as close to their natural state as possible.
4. Dopamine & Food
- Remember our chat with Michael E. Long on the 'Men Talking Mindfulness' podcast (Listen here… covered in last week’s newsletter)? Food can be a source of ‘dopamine hits’. Balance those comforting treats with nourishing choices to support long-term happiness (and health!).
5. The Ritual of Preparation
- Engage in the process of cooking as a form of meditation. Feel the textures of ingredients, notice the sounds and smells, and imbue your food with love and care.
A Challenge For You!
For one week, try practicing mindful eating at one meal a day. Sit down without distractions, savor each bite, and tune into how your body feels. Share your experiences with me on my LinkedIn Newsletter (the post is the same as the emailed newsletter).
Closing Thoughts
Nutrition, like mindfulness, is a daily practice. It’s not about perfection, but about making conscious, loving choices that honor our bodies and minds. It's a practice I, Jon Macaskill, deeply believe in and integrate into my daily life as a retired Navy SEAL Commander, renowned mindfulness teacher, and dedicated husband and father. And I'm here to tell you, the transformation that mindful nutrition can bring is profound and wide-reaching.
