#23 of 52 Being an “Alpha” without Being a Jerk!
(and why that matters to your leadership and your health and wellness!)
Good morning ! We hope this message finds you doing well - this is the 23rd of 52 weekly Mindfully Happy Newsletters from retired Navy SEAL, Jon Macaskill, and renowned NYC yoga guru, Will Schneider - hosts of the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast. Our goal with these weekly newsletters is to help you become happier, healthier, and more stress free in 2023!
This week, we’re discussing what being an “alpha” means. We live in a world where the term "alpha" is often associated with dominance and aggression. However, we want to redefine… no, that’s not right… we want to clearly define what it truly means to be an alpha male or female. Being an alpha is not about exerting power over others, but rather about being a leader who inspires and uplifts those around them.
Leadership, at its core, involves guiding and motivating others towards a common goal. It requires qualities like empathy, compassion, and the ability to understand and support the needs of others. True alphas embody these qualities, serving as beacons of inspiration rather than rulers of dominion.
Mindfulness plays a crucial role in the journey of becoming a true alpha. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, non-judgmentally observing our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. By cultivating mindfulness, we develop self-awareness and emotional intelligence, enabling us to lead with authenticity and empathy.
When we embrace mindfulness, we become more attuned to the needs and emotions of those around us. We listen actively and respond with compassion, fostering trust and building strong connections. This empathetic leadership style empowers others to grow and flourish, creating a positive and supportive environment.
Living as a true alpha not only benefits those we lead but also enhances our own well-being. By shifting our focus from dominance to inspiration, we experience a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose. When we inspire others to reach their potential, we create a ripple effect of positive change that reverberates throughout our personal and professional lives.
Moreover, adopting a mindful approach to leadership improves our mental and physical health. Mindfulness helps reduce stress, enhances emotional resilience, and improves decision-making abilities. By cultivating a mindful presence, we gain clarity, wisdom, and the capacity to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
So, let us redefine the concept of being an alpha and strive to be leaders who inspire others through empathy, compassion, and mindfulness. By embracing these qualities, we create environments where everyone can thrive and contribute their best selves. Ultimately, being a true alpha leads to a happier and healthier life, both for ourselves and those we influence.
Stay mindful, stay inspired, and keep leading with compassion!
Warm regards,
Jon and Will
