#22 of 52 The Power of Unplugging
Hello and welcome! This is the 22nd of 52 weekly Mindfully Happy Newsletters from Jon Macaskill and Will Schneider, hosts of the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast, to help you become happier, healthier, and more stress free in 2023!
As the world continues to spin at a rapid pace, it becomes increasingly vital for us to find solace in the midst of our busy lives. In this edition of our newsletter, we delve into the essence of mindfulness and explore how it enriches our precious time off. So, grab a cup of tea, find a cozy spot, and embark on this journey of rejuvenation with us.
In our modern, hyperconnected world, we are constantly bombarded by notifications, emails, and the ever-tempting allure of social media. While these technological marvels have undoubtedly revolutionized our lives, they also impose a constant stream of distractions that can prevent us from truly enjoying our downtime. Mindfulness invites us to unplug, both literally and figuratively, as we rediscover the joy of living in the present moment.
Imagine this: you find yourself lounging on a soft, sunlit patch of grass, birds chirping in the background, and a gentle breeze caressing your face. You set aside your electronic devices and allow yourself to be fully present in the tranquility of the moment. By detaching from the digital realm, you create space for genuine connection with yourself and the world around you.
To unplug literally means to disconnect from our gadgets and technological obligations, but it also involves cultivating an inner state of tranquility and calm. We can achieve this by engaging in mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or simply taking a leisurely stroll amidst nature's embrace. By consciously setting aside time to unwind and detach, we grant ourselves the opportunity to recharge and replenish our inner reservoirs.
When we talk about "unplugging" metaphorically, it encompasses detaching from the constant stream of thoughts that often occupy our minds. Our time off is meant for enjoyment and leisure, yet it's easy to get caught up in ruminations about the past or anxieties about the future. Mindfulness encourages us to release these mental burdens and immerse ourselves fully in the activities that bring us joy.
Whether you choose to sit and relax, basking in the gentle embrace of stillness, or immerse yourself in playful endeavors that ignite your inner child, mindfulness enhances these experiences. When we bring our full awareness to the present moment, we awaken our senses, savoring the rich tapestry of life's small pleasures.
Playing, in particular, offers a wonderful opportunity to engage in mindfulness. Whether it's indulging in a favorite hobby, engaging in physical activities, or simply laughing and connecting with loved ones, play allows us to be fully present and free from the burdens of everyday life. So let go of any self-judgment, and allow yourself the gift of unadulterated joy.
Remember, the essence of mindfulness lies in embracing the present moment with an open heart and an open mind. So, as you embark on your next period of respite, make a conscious effort to unplug, both from technology and from the noisy chatter within. Embrace the beauty of simplicity, engage in play, and allow yourself the gift of being fully present in the tapestry of your own life.
Wishing you mindful moments filled with relaxation, playfulness, and the sheer joy of being.
With warmest regards,
Jon and Will
