#15 of 52 - Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Hello and welcome! This is the 15th of 52 weekly Mindfully Happy Newsletters from Jon and Will from the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast to help you become happier, healthier, and more stress free in 2023!
This week we want to talk about the importance of getting uncomfortable and how mindfulness can help you navigate this discomfort. In his new book, "The Comfort Crisis," Michael Easter argues that our modern obsession with comfort is actually hindering our health and happiness. According to Easter, when we avoid discomfort, we miss out on the physical and mental benefits that come with pushing our limits.
Easter's message is especially relevant to those of us who practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment, no matter what is happening. When we practice mindfulness, we learn to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment, which allows us to respond to them in a more effective way.
But mindfulness isn't just about accepting the present moment; it's also about embracing it. When we practice mindfulness, we become more aware of our body and our surroundings. This heightened awareness allows us to experience discomfort in a more meaningful way. Instead of trying to avoid discomfort, we can lean into it and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
So, how can we apply this message to our daily lives? The next time you find yourself avoiding discomfort, try using mindfulness to embrace it instead. Take a deep breath, observe your thoughts and feelings, and see what you can learn from the experience. Remember, getting uncomfortable is good for you, and mindfulness can help you navigate the discomfort in a healthy and productive way.
If you're interested in learning more about the benefits of discomfort and how to embrace it, we highly recommend reading "The Comfort Crisis" by Michael Easter. It's a thought-provoking book that challenges our modern obsession with comfort and offers practical advice for embracing discomfort in a meaningful way.
As always, we encourage you to keep practicing mindfulness and to share your experiences with the community. We're all in this together, and we can all learn from each other's journeys.
With utmost respect and gratitude,
Jon and Will
