#12 of 52 - The Power of Being Kind to Yourself!
Hello and welcome! This is the 12th of 52 weekly Mindfully Happy Newsletters from Jon and Will from the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast to help you become happier, healthier, and more stress free in 2023! Also… a “not so subtle” reminder - today, Friday, March 17th is the last day to receive $200 off the full price of our upcoming retreat! Details are below!!
Last week, we discussed mindfulness and how it can help overcome procrastination. This week we are talking about the power of self compassion.
Self-compassion is important because it allows us to treat ourselves with kindness, understanding, and support, particularly during times of stress, difficulty, or failure. When we practice self-compassion, we are less likely to judge ourselves harshly, criticize ourselves, or be overly self-critical. This can lead to improved mental health, greater resilience, and more positive relationships with ourselves and others.
Mindfulness and meditation can help to develop self-compassion by increasing our awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By practicing mindfulness, we learn to observe our experiences without judgment, which can help us to become more accepting of ourselves and our flaws. Meditation can also help us to cultivate a sense of inner calm and stillness, which can increase our ability to respond to difficult situations with compassion and understanding.
A lack of self-compassion can be harmful both personally and professionally. When we lack self-compassion, we may experience low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. This can make it difficult to form and maintain healthy relationships with others. In addition, a lack of self-compassion can hinder our ability to perform well at work. When we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves and judge ourselves harshly, we may experience burnout, stress, and decreased job satisfaction.
Self-compassion is different from self-esteem. While self-esteem focuses on our sense of self-worth or value, self-compassion is more about treating ourselves with kindness and understanding. Self-compassion allows us to acknowledge and accept our shortcomings and mistakes, while still recognizing our inherent worth and value as human beings.
Here are some powerful quotes by Kristin Neff, a pioneering researcher and advocate for self-compassion and recent guest on our Men Talking Mindfulness podcast:
"Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a good friend we cared about."
"Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others."
"When we're self-compassionate, we're not constantly judging ourselves for perceived inadequacies."
"Self-compassion is not a way of judging ourselves positively or negatively; it is a way of relating to ourselves kindly and openly."
"Self-compassion provides an island of calm, a refuge from the stormy seas of endless positive and negative self-judgment."
