Happier, Healthier, and More Stress Free in 2023!
#9 of 52 - Mindfulness and Physical Fitness
Hello! Jon Macaskill here again, mindfulness coach from the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast; The Deliberate Discomfort Challenge; and Macaskill Consulting/Keynote Speaking. This is the 9th of 52 weekly Mindfully Happy Newsletters from us to help you become happier, healthier, and more stress free in 2023!
Last week, we discussed mindfulness and leadership. This week, we are going to jump into how mindfulness and physical fitness are inextricably intertwined!
Mindfulness and physical fitness are two practices that complement each other very well. A reminder, mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of one's thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations in the present moment. Physical fitness involves engaging in physical activity to improve one's physical health and wellbeing.
Here are some ways mindfulness and physical fitness can “FIT” together (get it!?):
Mindful exercise: Practicing mindfulness while engaging in physical activity can help you focus on your body's sensations and movements, which can increase your enjoyment of the activity and help you stay present in the moment. Mindful exercise can include activities such as yoga, tai chi, or walking meditation but also running, lifting, swimming - whatever it is, practicing being mindful DURING the exercise can make a world of difference!
Mindful eating: Mindfulness can also be applied to eating, which can be an important aspect of physical fitness. Mindful eating involves paying attention to the taste, texture, and smell of the food, as well as your body's hunger and fullness cues. This can help you make more conscious food choices and prevent overeating.
Reduced stress: Regular physical exercise can help reduce stress, and mindfulness can also be a powerful tool for managing stress. By bringing your attention to the present moment, mindfulness can help you reduce worry and anxiety, which can lead to better mental and physical health.
Improved focus: Both mindfulness and physical exercise can improve focus and concentration. Practicing mindfulness can help you train your mind to stay focused on the present moment, while physical exercise can help improve your overall cognitive function and mental clarity.
In summary, incorporating mindfulness into your physical fitness routine can help you enjoy the activity more, make conscious food choices, reduce stress, and improve focus and concentration.
As always, thank you for reading and we will see you next week for another installment of our mindfulness newsletter.
