#4 of 52 - Mindfulness for Parents
Hello! Jon Macaskill here again, mindfulness coach from the Men Talking Mindfulness podcast; The Deliberate Discomfort Challenge; and Macaskill Consulting/Keynote Speaking. This is the 4th of 52 weekly Mindfully Happy Newsletters from us to help you become happier, healthier, and more stress free in 2023!
Are you a parent who’s struggling … struggling with managing a job, parenting, and a relationship, all while trying to maintain some semblance of a personal life? Then this edition of the newsletter is for you! I will say this - parenting is and always will be hard - there’s no way around it. That said, mindfulness may help make it “less hard!” Here’s how:
Mindfulness and meditation practices can help parents who are struggling by providing them with tools to manage stress, increase self-awareness, and improve overall well-being. Mindfulness can help parents be more present in their interactions with their children, which can lead to more positive and meaningful connections. Meditation can also help parents develop a greater sense of inner peace and equanimity, which can help them respond to difficult situations with greater calm and patience. Additionally, mindfulness and meditation practices can help parents develop greater self-compassion, which can be especially useful when they inevitably make mistakes as parents.
There are many different mindfulness practices that can be beneficial for parents, here are a few that can be particularly helpful:
Body scan meditation: This practice involves lying down and focusing on different parts of the body, noticing any sensations or feelings that arise. This can help parents become more aware of their physical sensations and release tension from their body.
Breath awareness meditation: This practice involves simply focusing on the breath, without trying to change it in any way. This can help parents become more aware of their breath and develop a sense of calm and relaxation.
Loving-kindness meditation: This practice involves focusing on sending feelings of love and compassion to oneself, loved ones, and others. This can help parents develop a sense of warmth and compassion towards themselves and others, which can be especially useful when dealing with difficult emotions.
Mindful Parenting: This practice involves being present and aware during interactions with children, and responding to them with kindness and understanding. This can help parents build stronger connections with their children and respond to difficult situations with greater patience and compassion.
Yoga: Yoga can be a great way for parents to incorporate mindfulness into their daily routine. It can help them stay present in the moment and release tension from the body.
Lastly, it is important to remember that mindfulness practices are not a one-size-fits-all solution and it's important to find the one that resonates with the individual. Additionally, it's also important to remember that mindfulness is a continuous practice, so it's important to make time for it regularly.
This week I’ve added a goal journal - which can be helpful to everyone but can be especially helpful to parents who can often lose themselves in raising little ones; some information on our upcoming retreat; and TWO videos from our Men Talking Mindfulness Podcast - one on parenting and fatherhood and the other on parenting and motherhood… both can be listened to by either or both parents!
Please let me know if you’ve got any questions or anything you’d like to see incorporated into future newsletters. Have a wonderful week!
With utmost respect and gratitude,
Jon
